Here are 5 simple and efficient ways to transform the smell of musky pet odour to a revitalised fresh smelling home
We've all owned a pet or our fair share of pets in our time and know the joys and struggles that come along with it. If its not the pet hair imbedded in your carpets or burning out your vacuum cleaners, then its the musky odour that your pet is leaving on your furniture.
Anything from a quick pee break outside or their traditional evening walks can bring in a lot of unwanted dirt and allergens from the outside environments. The grass, flowers, pathways, local rivers, and other pets. These all have contributing factors to what your pet brings back home.

You can image letting them out and them playing in the grass outside on a nice rainy day, your pet then comes back inside super proud of their dirty, wet paws that they smudge along your tiled kitchen floors. They end up on the living room carpet sleeping their walk off and the next minute you know, its been weeks of the same routine and you start to notice a certain "pet smell" coming from your living room.
I don't think we need to clarify more on the "pet smell" - true pet owners that have their pets rummaging outside in the gardens or local forests/rivers know what we're talking about.
On that note, here's a few helpful tips and tricks that aid in preventing the pet odour and getting rid of pet odours in your home that you may currently have.
So lets dive straight into tips for getting rid of pet odour in your home
Tip One: Keep Your Pets Clean
Now before you think that we're purposely trying to state the obvious, we're trying to emphasize the importance of regularly cleaning and brushing your pets coats. This helps shed the build up of hairs and any excess dirt and dander they store in their coats
In return for keeping your pets clean, they'll leave your home with less hair, less dirt and therefore less probability for a musky, dirty pet smell.
So whether you scoop your pooch up and put them in the shower to give them a good scrub down or you hose them down outside on a warm day, either will be highly beneficial for your pet and your home.
Tip Two: Your Vacuum Cleaner is Your Friend
Your pets are constantly bringing in dirt, mud, dander and allergens from outside into your home. Whether they're rolling on the carpet, shaking their ears, licking their paws and the rug, the chances of them spreading this dirt and bacteria is always there.
Most of us usually pay attention to "surface level" dirt and dust, but there's areas that we should be focusing our attention on with the vacuum cleaner. Main areas that need regular vacuum cleaning would be any fabric carpets and rugs. Remember to hoover your radiators, air vents and underneath your couches and beds. These are some areas that people often times skip out on and they're riddled with buildup hair, dander, dust.
Feel free to open up a window every morning, or as frequently as possible to allow fresh air to circulate throughout your home. You should be vacuuming your floors and rugs, or any areas where your pets spend majority of their time living and sleeping, at least a few times a week.
The best vacuum cleaners on the market for cleaning up after your pet are ones with HEPA filters. These filters assist in trapping microparticles of dust, dander and hair to ensure that it doesn't blow out and land on other surfaces.
Tip Three: Picking Up After Your Pets
If you have a new pet or they haven't been house trained yet, it's best to clean up after them as soon as possible. If your pets have relieved themselves against any furniture, walls, doors or on the floor, you will need to absorb and wipe the urine up straight away. Use paper towels or a spare bath towel and dab the area to try absorb as much liquid.
If you have kittens and use a litter box, you will need to make sure to empty this daily and give the container and litter scoop a decent disinfection to avoid carrying or spreading bacteria throughout your home.
If you are able to purchase a small, portable spot cleaner, these works wonders on any stains on carpets, mattresses, rugs or any fabric in general. We've tried and tested the Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro. This portable spot cleaner was easy to store, and use with a small bristle brush head and decent suction.
If you do not have a portable Spot Cleaner, you can make a simple solution of vinegar and water which some may refer to as a miracle spray. The
"Toxoplasmosis (tok-so-plaz-MOE-sis) is an infection with a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. People often get the infection from eating undercooked meat. You can also get it from contact with cat feces." - Mayo Clinic

Tip Four: Cleaning Your Pets Bedding
We often forget just how much grime and bacteria can throw a party in our furry pals' beds. After every walk, they bring home a souvenir of dirt, allergens, and debris in their coats and paws, then snuggle up in their beds like it's a five-star hotel. Day in and day out, this mess piles up like it's training for a marathon, eventually leading to bigger problems, like health issues for our beloved furballs, and of course, an odour in our homes.
Now its a completely different thing if your pets have 2 beds, their own and yours. If you enjoy a sneaky cuddle every now and then with your pet, or you allow them to sleep on your bed with you, remember to change your sheets frequently (likely once a week)
Remember: we previously recommended purchasing a spot cleaner. You can use it to give their bedding a thorough clean. If you can put it in the washing machine, go ahead! If you can use your spot cleaner, opt for that as a Plan B. If your furry friend snuggles with you on your bed, you can use the same spot cleaner to give your mattress a decent disinfection and clean, along with any rugs or furniture that your pet loves.
Tip Five: Air Purification and Neutralizing Odour
Ensuring proper ventilation in your home is essential for maintaining a healthy living environment. Here are some effective strategies:
Keep Windows Open Daily: Allow fresh air to circulate by regularly opening your windows.
Use Air Purifiers: Invest in air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters that can absorb moisture and odors, contributing to a fresher atmosphere.
Baking Soda: Place bowls of baking soda around your home to absorb unpleasant smells effectively.
Strong Chemicals: Consider using strong cleaning agents that focus on breaking down odor-causing enzymes, such as those from urine or feces.
Hopefully once you've managed to locate the target of your odour problems, or if you used our useful tips, you will be left with a clean and fresh smelling home.
